Cable Analyst
|
Fugro
Pelagos, the global leader in submarine cable survey
services and software, has produced a powerful new
suite of software for managing your submarine cable
data. Cable Analyst allows you to easily control,
analyze, edit and distribute your data and includes
tools built exclusively for marine cable data.
Fugro Pelagos has built on ESRI's
core GIS technology and created an extension module
that "plugs in" to ArcGIS. This extension
provides menus, tools and features that are very specific
to submarine cable data and the submarine cable installation
industry. At the same time, all of the power and capabilities
of the core ArcGIS product are still available.
The software has been designed to primarily work with
(display, chart, print, edit, manage and archive)
Route Position List (RPL) data. These could either
be planned, as-built, repair or historical data.

Route Development |
| Cable Analyst
provides facilities that permit users to quickly and
accurately develop cable routes at the planning stage
of a cable project. In a graphical environment, existing
metadata, such as coastline, bathymetry, nautical charts
and side-scan imagery, can be combined with data for
existing cables to rapidly generate and edit block sheets
and straight line diagrams. The system is also capable
of displaying electronic nautical charts in several
different formats. ArcGIS supports the display
of the VPF and S57 (via included data converter) vector
formats, as well as BSB and ARCS (via a third party
data converter) raster formats. This means the user
can develop planned cable routes over actual nautical
charts for a given area.
Another powerful capability is the Great Circle Guideline.
With this tool, the user can create Great Circle routes
between desired points on the map and subsequently
use this as a guide line or guide corridor for more
detailed cable route planning. Additionally, with
the click of a button, depths can be calculated, from
the use of included worldwide bathymetry contour data.
|
Cable Maintenance |
| Cable Analyst
provides powerful tools to load and modify cable system
data with easy to use wizards and dialogs. Once RPL
data are loaded, they can be easily manipulated using
the RPL editor. For maintenance purposes, this means
repair data can quickly and accurately be used to update
the RPL data for the relevant system and segment. Geographic
coordinates, as well as cable lengths, can both be edited
within the RPL editor with new slack values computed
automatically.
The latest RPL data for any system can be printed
in block sheet format, as a straight-line diagram,
or as one or a series of north-up charts at any time.
This data can be forwarded to or accessed by a maintenance
vessel as and when required.
Furthermore, the system has been developed with an
open-ended design scheme, which permits the rapid
expansion of the system and database structure to
include links to other databases of information. Other
databases could include historical information on
fishing habitat, cable faults and seismology. All
data can be viewed in a graphical environment, where
it can be combined with other layers such as coastline,
bathymetry, nautical charts and side-scan imagery.

RPL Data Management |
| Cable Analyst
provides the capability to convert new, existing or
legacy RPL data from its existing format to the Cable
Analyst database structure. Since every company can
have slightly different cable information and data formats,
customized import tools have been developed to load
several formats of RPL data. Once Route Position List
data are loaded in Cable Analyst, a cable system editor
provides several tools for identifying, tracking and
updating new and existing cable systems. Additionally,
depths can be calculated, with the click of a button,
from the use of included worldwide bathymetry contour
data. Furthermore, Cable Analyst provides several avenues
for exporting data into various formats, including *.dxf,
*.shp, Excel, Word, HTML, RTF and ASCII (*.txt).
In terms of analysis, Cable Analyst includes full
GIS capabilities, including spatial and conditional
queries, proximity analysis, areal buffer creation,
intersection calculation and much more. Capabilities
also include the ability for various overlay analyses
and visual modifications. All layers in Cable Analyst,
including cable systems, can be turned on or off and
reordered. The data layers can also be reclassified
to fit the user's criteria; visual display of each
of the layers can be modified to fit the user's existing
charts. The data views and the map layouts can be
annotated to display system names and other relevant
information residing in the database. In addition
to viewing the cable system information digitally,
Cable Analyst also includes powerful printing capabilities.
Charts can be produced - singly or in series - to
provide an overview of cable systems in a specific
area, and sophisticated reports can convey tabular
data.
